Oakland’s toughest band is calling it quits. Although they might get together again at some point, guitarist Daniel is moving to New York and the boys have decided that being a functional band is pretty much impossible for now.
This is sad news, but the group is going out on a high note by playing one final show at 21 Grand this Sunday, May 22. Don’t miss your last chance to check out “Oakland’s own floating destruction”.
Double Negative still has a limited number of last year’s To Give, Not a Gift available for sale. You can order a copy directly from us here.
After months of slacking careful planning, The Death of a Party have finally put together a summer tour. Beginning at the end of July, the boys will be kicking around the country for a few weeks with fellow Oaklanders The Lovemakers.
Let’s hope all those people who come out in search of a sexy time with The Lovemakers don’t get too scared by The Death of a Party. Gareth can get pretty freaky with all that yelling and running around.
We’ve got our fingers crossed. Check out all details over on the band’s shows page.
We just got our hands on some video from the Death of a Party CD Release show that took place a couple weeks ago. Here’s the band covering David Bowie’s “Suffragette City” with some help from Scott Blonde of the Lovemakers.
This is new track “Miss Veronica” along with some footage on the on-stage dance party it inspired.
We have no idea how or why, but uber-respected music writer Greil Marcus decided to praise the new Death of a Party album in the new issue of Interview magazine. Here’s what he had to say:
“Four people from Oakland, California, gulping, shouting, delirious, only occasionally pulling back to gain an inch of perspective, running right over a cliff (“She’s too young to be sleeping with a married man, but you’re too old to care”), and then scrambling back up to try it again. The songs are all mysteries, hard to penetrate, full of allure, demanding you solve them.”
Thanks Greil. I guess we’re buddies now. Don’t let us forget to give you a giant high-five next time we cross paths.
No, the band is not breaking up. Sorry if I scared anyone.
John from The Fucking Ocean is leaving San Francisco for the bright lights and delicious pizza of New York City. Although the band will be taking a little break from shows while they work out the long-distance music-making process, in the very near future they plan to start playing again on a semi-regular basis in both New York and San Francisco.
Nevertheless, those heady days when The Fucking Ocean’s distinct brand of noisy post-punk could be heard three or four times a month in San Francisco will soon be a thing of the past. Now you feel bad for taking The Fucking Ocean for granted, don’t you?
The band has two final SF shows planned before their little hiatus: May 12 at 12 Galaxies as part of the Mission Creek Music Festival and May 19 at Warehouse 1310. Go to our shows page for all the details.
